Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Omadacycline? Is Omadacycline safe for nursing mother and child? Does Omadacycline extracts into breast milk? Does Omadacycline has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Omadacycline influence milk supply or can Omadacycline decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Omadacycline usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of omadacycline during breastfeeding. The manufacturer states that breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment and for 4 days after the last dose. However, based on the excretion of other tetracycline antibiotics omadacycline, amounts in milk are expected to be low and probably poorly absorbed orally by the breastfed infant. If an infant is breastfed, monitor the infant for possible effects on the gastrointestinal flora, such as diarrhea, candidiasis (e.g., thrush, diaper rash) or rarely, blood in the stool indicating possible antibiotic-associated colitis. As a theoretical precaution, avoid prolonged or repeat courses during nursing.
