I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Mycophenolate? Is Mycophenolate safe for nursing mother and child? Does Mycophenolate extracts into breast milk? Does Mycophenolate has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Mycophenolate influence milk supply or can Mycophenolate decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Mycophenolate usage in lactation

Because no information is available on the use of mycophenolate during breastfeeding, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.

Mycophenolate Side Effects in Breastfeeding

The National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry has collected information on 6 mothers (5 kidney and 2 heart transplants) who breastfed 7 infants while taking a mycophenolate product. The maximum time that any of the infants was breastfed was 14 months. None of the infants had any reported adverse reactions.[1]
