Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Caspofungin? Is Caspofungin safe for nursing mother and child? Does Caspofungin extracts into breast milk? Does Caspofungin has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Caspofungin influence milk supply or can Caspofungin decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Caspofungin usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of caspofungin during breastfeeding. Caspofungin is indicated for use in infants over 3 months of age and it is poorly absorbed orally, so it is not likely to reach the bloodstream of the infant or cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants. However, no published experience exists with caspofungin during breastfeeding, therefore an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
