Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Imipenem - cilastatin? Is Imipenem - cilastatin safe for nursing mother and child? Does Imipenem - cilastatin extracts into breast milk? Does Imipenem - cilastatin has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Imipenem - cilastatin influence milk supply or can Imipenem - cilastatin decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Imipenem - cilastatin usage in lactation

Limited information indicates that imipenem produces low levels in milk that are not expected to cause adverse effects in breastfed infants. Occasionally disruption of the infant's gastrointestinal flora, resulting in diarrhea or thrush has been reported with beta-lactams, but these effects have not been adequately evaluated. Imipenem-cilastatin is acceptable in nursing mothers.
